Maastricht Tour with Rafael Willems

On Sunday the 4th of October members of Restauratoren Nederland are invited to join us for a free guided walking tour through Maastricht, beginning at 15:00.

Our guide for the afternoon will be Rafael Willems, Dutch teacher for the Nederlands voor Restauratoren group. Rafael’s lessons bring together learning Dutch with the vocabulary and situations that conservation-restoration professionals encounter in their working lives. For this special afternoon, we’re taking the classroom outside and into the streets of Maastricht!

Discover one of the Netherlands’ oldest cities

With its Roman origins, medieval fortifications, historic churches, narrow streets and distinctive architecture, Maastricht has plenty of stories hidden within its buildings and public spaces. Situated on the River Maas and shaped over centuries by its position at the crossroads of different regions and cultures, the city is an especially fitting place for a group of conservators and restorers to explore.

Rafael will guide us through the city, introducing some of Maastricht’s history, architecture and local stories along the way. And because the entire tour will be in Dutch, it’s also a relaxed opportunity to practise listening and speaking Dutch outside the classroom. You certainly don’t need perfect Dutch to come along - curiosity and a willingness to give it a try are much more important!

From Nederlands voor Restauratoren to Restauratoren Nederland

The tour is being offered first to members of the Nederlands voor Restauratoren group, but we’re very pleased to open the invitation more widely to anyone who is a member of Restauratoren Nederland.

Whether you already speak Dutch confidently, are currently learning, or simply fancy discovering Maastricht from a different perspective, we would love you to join us. It’s also a chance to meet fellow conservation-restoration professionals in a more informal setting, practise some Dutch and enjoy an afternoon together in Maastricht.
