Inleiding

Hoe red je grote aantallen foto’s na een overstroming? Dit is een restauratievraagstuk waar Ana Carreres Llopis en Paula Ogayar Oroz zich mee bezighielden na de overstroming in Valencia in 2024. De desastreuze overstroming had grote gevolgen voor de lokale bevolking, die niet alleen een groot aantal bezittingen verloren, maar ook herinneringen in de vorm van familiefoto’s. Salvem les Fotos, een samenwerking tussen vijf universiteiten en andere organisaties, werd opgezet met het doel de bevolking hun gekoesterde herinneringen te helpen behouden. Voor dit project zetten Ana en Paula zich in, waarbij ze vrijwilligers begeleidden om zo veel mogelijk foto’s veilig te stellen.

Inhoud workshop

This hands-on workshop is based on the lessons learned from the efforts to recover photographic materials from families affected by the 2024 floods. It aims to give a legal work frame from working with the community and solutions to challenges found during the project, such as cold storage and smart resource management. Special attention to the subsequent research, focused on the design and validation of a method for the simultaneous separation and cleaning of adhered photographs that was developed during 2024-2025 as a response to some of the more difficult materials, will be given. The workshop will open with context introductions and legal frameworks to establish the bases of the practice. This will be followed by a brief theoretical introduction to the separation and cleaning of blocks of photographs. Participants will be able to engage in a step-by-step practical application of the method, exploring key variables such as surfactant selection, water temperature, and material response. This will be complemented by other short introductions to cold storage packing and drying techniques. This workshop emphasises decision-making in real scenarios, balancing technical effectiveness with conservation ethics and legal responsibilities.

Biografie docenten

Ana Carreres Llopis graduated in 2025 with an Master 's Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage by Universitat Politécnica de València - UPV (Spain). While finishing her Master's studies, she spearheaded the coordination and emergency treatment of photographic archives for families affected by the floods in Valencia through the "Salvem les fotos" initiative. This led her to focus her dissertation on the design and validation of an emergency conservation protocol for simultaneous separation and cleaning of flood-damaged photographs. Her training was complemented by previous internships at national and international institutions such as the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (2023-2024). She currently works as a freelance conservator in private practice in Valencia, Spain.

Paula Ogayar Oroz graduated in 2024 with an Advanced Professional Programme by the University of Amsterdam (NL), from which she also holds a MSc in Conservation and Restoration of cultural heritage with a photography speciality (2020-2022). Additionally, she completed a Graduate Diploma in Management, Preservation and Dissemination of Photographic Archives (2016-2019, Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, Spain) and a bachelor’s degree in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage (2011-2016, Universidad del Pais Vasco, Spain). Her trajectory in the last ten years involves different institutions and collections in Spain, NL, Hong Kong, and the UK. She currently works as the conservator in the project focused on the digitalization of the Royal Photographic Society Collection, based at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, UK.

Aanmelden

Deze workshop is gericht op zowel papier- als fotorestauratoren. Kennis van fotorestauratie en vaardigheid in het herkennen van verschillende typen foto’s is voor deze workshop niet nodig. Vanwege het beperkte aantal plekken zullen wij in eerste instantie restauratoren toelaten voor wie deze workshop het meeste beoogde nut zal hebben en die bij hun werk met foto’s in aanraking komen, alvorens leden die uit louter interesse zouden willen deelnemen een plaats te bieden.
